Bangladesh government observed ‘energy security day’ yesterday, on this occasion a seminar was organized by Petrobangla.
There the finance minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhith said, the country’s gas is limited and we should now concentrate on the proper use of the valuable natural resource. We need to decide which sector should get priority. The minister said, we should stop household use of gas, people should use LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), and the government is trying to ensure availability of PLG. The gas should be used for power generation.
Muhith also praised the farsightedness of the founder president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who bought five gas fields from shell Petroleum Company at a minimal price on 9th August 1975; as a result people enjoyed gas supply at cheap.
He said three thousand MW of electricity will be added to national grid within next December, the government is trying to increase the gas production; he mentioned gas production has increased 30 crore cubic feet during last two and half years.
Now the country has 4.3 TCF proved gas reserve and 2.6 more probable gas reserves, which is not enough to meet the future demand. Experts are advising to concentrate on more gas exploration on land and sea, they are also advising to reduce dependence on gas.
