There is little chance that BNP leader Ariful Haque Chowdhary, who has been mayor for two consecutive terms, will contest the Sylhet Municipal Corporation elections, according to his close aides.
Earlier, Ariful Haque said that he would reveal his decision regarding his candidature at a rally in Sylhet city on Saturday afternoon.
The BNP announced that they would not participate in the municipal elections under the current government. However, it is being speculated that Ariful Haque may become an independent candidate in view of his immense popularity. Although he has not said anything clearly and the people of Sylhet remain curious about this matter.
People close to Ariful Haque said that he is under various pressures regarding the upcoming city elections. He has many issues to consider, including the party’s stand.
