As the next general elections approach and the BNP continues its agitation, the government is reportedly trying to divide the party.
Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League joint general secretary Hasan Mahmood said at a party rally on Monday that many people are lining up to join Trinamool BNP, while another party led by current vice-president Major (retd) Hafeezuddin Ahmed Is going to emerge. They will soon organize a conference in Dhaka. Even though BNP will not participate in the elections, its leaders will.
However, Hafeezuddin said that he is still in BNP.
Several senior BNP leaders told Prothom Alo that Hafizuddin has not been active in the party for a long time and they have no information about his activities.
He said that a group of BNP leaders and workers led by two vice-presidents Hafeezuddin Ahmed and Shaukat Mahmood, defied the party’s order, took position and demonstrated in the capital on December 14, 2020.
After this, BNP issued show cause notices to both these leaders. At that time, relations between Hafizuddin and the BNP were tense.
Later Hafizuddin replied to the show cause notice. However, BNP did not take any action against him and he is still the vice president of the party.
