Geo reported that some people are still trapped in the train compartment and others have been shifted to hospitals. Train services were suspended in interior districts of Sindh and rescue workers were dispatched to the area.
Accidents are common on Pakistan’s crumbling rail system and successive governments have for years been trying to secure funding for infrastructure projects to upgrade the rail network as part of China’s Belt and Road initiative.
In 2021, a major train accident in Sindh killed 56 people and injured over 100.
