Emphasis on democracy and human rights

Later at a meeting of rights defenders, a senior Human Rights Watch official referred to the case against Dr. Muhammad Yunus as part of the government’s intimidation and harassment to suppress civil society.

Rights Secretary Adilur Rahman Khan was present in the meeting and some pro-government persons harassed him there.

In its recommendation, the US urged Bangladesh to take steps to protect people’s voting rights, ensure freedom of expression and ideas for journalists and civil society, and hold members of law enforcement agencies involved in human rights violations.

The UK representative stressed the need to hold free, fair and inclusive elections and advocated freedom of expression, association, assembly and the judiciary.

A total of 118 countries participated in the human rights review session on Bangladesh. Observing the session, Pakistan, Cuba and Romania will prepare a report and it will be published on Wednesday. Final recommendations will be published on November 24.
