The prime minister’s speechwriter M Nazrul Islam quoted him as saying, “The Rohingya are currently living an overcrowded life in their camps in Cox’s Bazar.”
“If the Rohingya can be relocated to Bhasan Char, where housing has been built for over 100,000 people with livelihoods, they can lead a dignified life in a livable environment.”
He said that Rohingya children can receive education in their native language on the island.
The government has spent more than 30 billion on providing shelter to refugees there, along with access to amenities such as cooking facilities, electricity, water and sewerage systems, playgrounds and cyclone shelters.
Hasina said that Bangladesh has given shelter to many Rohingyas on humanitarian grounds, but they are now becoming a big burden for the country.
