According to the annual report of UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) the population of the country is 16 crore 44 lakh, which Bangladesh government don’t agree.
Fifth population and Housing Census, 2011 preliminary report says countries population is 14 crore 23 lakh 19 thousand, of which 7 crore 12 lakh 55 thousand male and 7 crore 10 lakh 64 thousand are female. Gender imbalance in the country has shrunk over the years, now there are 100.3 men against 100 every women. In 2001 which was 106.4 men against 100 every women.
Now Bangladesh is the third most populated country in South East Asia after India and Pakistan.
Growth rate is 1.34 percent and density of population per square km is 964. In 2001 census report showed a population of 12 crore 43 lakh. So 1 crore 80 lakh added in last ten years.
With 4 crore 67 lakh people Dhaka remains most populated district of the country. In 2001 which was 3 crore 90 lakh.
This is only a preliminary result, it will verified by Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) before publishing the final report in September.
This report was revealed on today at a press conference at the NEC Auditorium of the Planning Commission in the city by planning minister A K Khandker.
Population census is conducted after every 10 years. Independent Bangladesh’s first census was held in 1974, which showed population was 7 crore 63 lakh. Growth rate has declined significantly due to government’s family planning program.
