Bangladesh economy under stress: Expert panel urges real solutions, not quick fixes

The economy is undoubtedly under stress. High inflation, low foreign exchange reserves, weak remittances, dollar crisis, declining exports are some of the challenges faced by Bangladesh. The new government may show a confident and brave face, but they have many economic problems to contend with.

The panelists made these comments at a BIPSS Policy Circle discussion on the topic ‘Bangladesh: The Economy Under Stress’ held at a hotel in the capital city today, Sunday.

The expert panel comprising Fahmida Khatoon, Executive Director, Center for Policy Dialogue, and Parvez Karim Abbasi, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, East West University, spoke about various aspects of the economy, challenges and possible ways forward.

The discussion was moderated by Major General ANM Muniruzzaman (Retd.), President, Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS).
