Begum Rokeya was the initiator of women education in Bangladesh

Speakers at a discussion at Pairaband today said that Begum Rokeya first understood the essence of education long ago for women renaissance, their socioeconomic and political empowerment.

Vision, philosophy, thinking and conscience of Begum Rokeya have been playing a vital role in this present era of science and digitalization in the policymaking process for time befitting women education and ensuring equal rights of the women, they said.

They said the present discriminatory social attitude, repression, and violence against women could be prevented through establishing the moral courage and teachings of Begum Rokeya in our present society.

It has been proven now that the present society needs educated womenfolk with their enhanced participation in all socioeconomic and political spheres to see peace and build a happy, prosperous and developed medium-income digital Bangladesh, they said.

They were addressing the second day’s discussion of the three-day official observance of Rokeya Day-2010 that began yesterday at Pairaband to mark the 130th birth and 78th death anniversaries of Begum Rokeya at her birthplace.

Today’s programmes also included drawing competition in two categories for primary school students, essay competition in three categories and recitation from poem ‘Bashi Ful’ for class six to class ten students.

Vice Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University Prof M Abdul Jalil Miah attended the discussion titled ‘Begum Rokeya’s Thoughts about Education, Social Conscience and Politics’ as the chief guest with Nirbahi Officer of Mithapukur upazila Saiful Islam in the chair.
