In February 2018, Khaleda was sent to jail after being sentenced to five years in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. The High Court increased the sentence to 10 years.

The trial court also sentenced him to seven years in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

The 77-year-old former prime minister was released on a suspended sentence in March 2020 on health grounds. The government extended suspended sentences several times.

Khaleda has been living in her Gulshan residence since her release from jail. She has not gone to her office near her house since her release from jail. The BNP president also refrained from issuing a formal statement during this period. The party did not give any reason behind his silence in politics.

He was hospitalized several times for treatment of various ailments, but the government rejected his family’s pleas to allow him to travel abroad for advanced medical care.

Anisul said the family claimed in the petitions that her life would be at risk if she did not get treatment abroad as she was “seriously ill”.
