Canada set to field first transgender cricketer in official international match

The International Cricket Council’s rules on transgender players, revised two years ago, are looser than those recently adopted by many sports.

Transgender rights in sport have become a controversial issue as sports seek to balance inclusivity while ensuring there is no unfair advantage in women’s sport.

Trans women wishing to play women’s international cricket must demonstrate that “her serum testosterone concentration has consistently been less than 5 nmol/L1 for a period of at least 12 months, and that she is ready, willing and are capable.” She will remain below that level as long as she continues to compete”.

The ICC also states that male-to-female trans players must “provide a written and signed declaration to the satisfaction of the designated medical official that their gender identity is female”.
