About 14 percent of the workers returned home due to low wages while about 16 percent had to return after being detained. About 10 percent of the returnees did not have legal visas and about 12.8 percent returned home due to physical illness.
These were found in a research conducted by private research organisation, Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) among 218 migrant workers who went abroad and returned after 2020. A female employee who returned from Saudi Arabia alleged that her employer used to sexually harass her.
Although many female workers in some Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia reportedly faced sexual exploitation, apparently the government has not taken any effective steps in this regard. Although the women workers who came with the allegations returned with the help of the embassy, many could not return. They endure torture month after month.
