Elections in five cities bring different challenges for AL, BNP and EC

Speaking to Prothom Alo, Awami League presidium member and Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzak said that they (AL) took the city elections very seriously. He will strive to ensure competitive and acceptable elections during city elections.

Lack of trust in the Election Commission is also a major issue now. In addition, the city elections will also clarify whether the Election Commission can function independently, outside the influence of the government.

Election observer Munira Khan believes that the Election Commission should follow through on its commitment to conduct competitive and acceptable elections ahead of the city polls. Otherwise, people’s trust on the Election Commission will increase further.

Election Commissioner Mohd Anisur Rahman told First Eye that in the case of a non-participatory election, the challenge would be different from a participatory election. However, despite challenges and possible obstacles, they will try to hold free and fair elections, he said.
