He has been barred from holding any public office for five years after he began a three-year sentence on Saturday for illegally selling state gifts earned by him and his family during his 2018-2022 term.

Before the court heard the appeal, his lawyer Naeem Panjutha said, “Imran Khan will be released if the case is heard on merits.”

Panjutha said the court has issued notice to the authorities concerned to reply, but has not fixed any date for the next hearing.

Khan, who has denied any wrongdoing, was arrested from his Lahore home and is currently in a jail near Islamabad.
