Under such circumstances, it is necessary that the policy-making authorities of the country take emergency measures to overcome the impending energy crisis and bring it down to tolerable levels.
1. The two major gas fields of our country, Kailashtila and Rashidpur each have primary reserves of more than 2 TCF and remaining reserves are also more than 2 TCF, yet gas extraction is relatively low. It is necessary that the production here should be increased immediately. Bibiana, located near these two areas, has a daily output of 1,100 units, yet Kailashtila, almost the same size, has a daily output of only 30 units and Rashidpur only 45 units. If a large number of new development wells are drilled and old wells are worked, higher production will be possible. Results can be achieved by implementing a relatively short-term plan.
2. In 2011, Petrobangla hired M/s Schlumberger, a foreign consulting firm, to find ways and means to increase gas production from the wells. After completing its tests, the company identified 49 wells and recommended that they be rehabilitated and refurbished and that new equipment be used to increase production. These recommendations have not yet been implemented. Therefore, these recommendations should be considered and implemented immediately. It will be possible to get results in less time.
3. The number of exploratory wells in under-explored Bangladesh should be increased significantly every year. Even two-thirds of the mainland area has not been properly explored. The vast offshore potential has been little explored, that too only in shallow seas. Not a single well has been dug in the deep sea. Including it in long term plans is the best means to solve the gas crisis.
