Gold heists involving policemen: ensuring accountability and punishment for the officers responsible

The incident took place on December 14 at around 6.30 am. Victim businessman Gaurango Dutta told that he has Shipi Jewelers shop in Sonali Market of Tongi Bazaar. When his nephew Anik Ghosh left for the shop with 200 Bhori of melted gold in Tanti Bazaar in old Dhaka, a microbus stopped him at Gausul Azam Avenue, Sector 13, Uttara. Four men, calling themselves DBs, got down from the microbus to handcuff Anik and take him to the car. They snatched 200 Bhori of gold and mobile phone from him and left him near Uttara station of Metrorail.

Later on 24 December, a person named Ghiyas Uddin was arrested with the help of local police. He has been posted as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) at Sripur Police Station. The other five arrested in this gold robbery incident are Jahangir Hussain (Litton), Golam Sarwar (49), Anees Mollah (30), Sujan Chandra Das (29) and Amir. Apart from Aamir, four of them admitted their involvement in the incident and gave statements in the court. Earlier, there were reports in the media that DB Police had abducted a CID officer and collected ransom of Taka 1.5 crore.
