After Kohli and Gill were dismissed in quick succession by left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka, India’s number four Shreyas Iyer provided the final momentum to the innings with a smashing 82 off 56 balls.
Iyer hit three fours and six sixes in his innings, before Madushanka took 5-80 to take his first five-wicket haul in the format, dismissing the local batsman.
Madushanka gave Sri Lanka a dream start by dismissing in-form India skipper Rohit Sharma with the second ball of the innings after electing to bowl after winning the toss on a hot and humid day at the Wankhede Stadium.
After this, Kohli scored 88 runs in 94 balls, while Gill defeated the Sri Lankan bowlers by playing an inning of 92 runs. Gill survived a dropped catch on eight runs while Kohli also got early relief on 10 runs during his innings.
