In India’s GI application, it was noted that the Hindu Tantubai community was involved in Tangail saree weaving and they migrated to different areas of West Bengal, India during partition.
Debapriya said that this statement is contrary to reality because apart from Hindus, many Muslims have been associated with the production of Tangail sarees in the Tangail area of Bangladesh for a long time. In fact, Muslims are more involved in the production process than Hindus.
The renowned economist further said that GI recognition includes the geographical background, quality and preservation of the product. It is true that some people associated with the product moved to India during Partition, but this is not enough to change its geographical identity. Fake information has been used while providing GI recognition to Tangail Saree.
