Iran says UK-linked arrests reflect ‘pernicious role’ in protests

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday that seven people, including some with dual nationalities, have been arrested over anti-government protests in the country.

The British Foreign Office said it was seeking further information from the Iranian authorities on reports that British-Iranian dual citizens had been arrested.

Kanani said that Tehran had informed the respective governments of the detainees and had “explained their crimes”.

For “humanitarian reasons”, he said, the detainees were allowed contact with their families over the Christmas holiday.

Tehran has blamed foreign enemies and their agents for the protests, which have turned into a popular uprising by Iranians from all levels of society, one of the boldest challenges to the country’s clerical rulers since the 1979 revolution .
