Muggers stabbed a college student to death and injured his friend in a bid to snatch their motorbike near Dhaka Metropolitan Police Headquarters in city’s Ramna last night.

The dead, Milton Barua, was a second year intermediate student of Siddheswari Degree College, and the injured, Mohammad Raihan, was a student of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute at Tejgaon.

They were residents of Baganbari in the capital’s Malibagh.

Mohammad Farhad, a friend of the victims, quoting Raihan said the duo along with their other friend were taking tea at a tea-stall on the spot, keeping their motorbike beside the stall around 9:00pm.

All of a sudden, two muggers reached the spot, hopped on their motorbike and attempted to speed away. As Barua tried to resist the criminals, one of them stabbed him in his throat. Raihan also sustained stab injury from the other criminal when he moved to save Barua.

As the locals rushed to their aid, the muggers fled the spot leaving the motorbike behind, Farhad added.

Locals at first took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. They were later taken to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) where Barua succumbed to his injuries at about 11:30pm.
