“We are going to work together with all countries, India, China and all other countries,” he told AFP.
Muizzu said he hoped to initiate talks with New Delhi on the return of Indian personnel deployed to operate the three aircraft gifted to Maldives.
India traditionally considers the Maldives, a country of about 380,000 Sunni Muslims, within its sphere of influence.
But during Yameen’s presidency, who borrowed heavily from China for construction projects, New Delhi was concerned about Beijing’s growing influence.
India has a history of entanglements in the Maldives, including deploying troops to foil a 1988 coup attempt.
But Muizu faces an even bigger challenge: His country is one of those most at risk from rising sea levels linked to climate change.
Eighty percent of the Maldives lie less than one meter (three feet) above sea level.
