NBR in trouble over IMF conditions on revenue collection

According to NBR sources, the revenue authorities have to collect an additional revenue of Tk 300 billion in the upcoming financial year. Therefore, the revenue collection target has been set at Tk 4,300 billion, which is 16 percent higher than the target for the current fiscal year.

If there is a revenue shortfall of more than Tk 300 billion in the current fiscal year, the authorities will have to collect 25 percent more revenue than the current target. This is a growth that the country has never achieved.

Ahsan H Mansour, executive director of the Policy Research Institute (PRI), said, “With the current tax administration, it would be quite impossible to collect 4,300 billion taka in the next fiscal year. It would have been possible if the reforms had been initiated three to four years ago.” ‘
