Police later arrested Shakeel Hasan, 23, from Kamarkhanda area of ​​Sirajganj and Masood Rana, 27, from Ghazipur on tip-off.

Liaquat Ali Khan, deputy commissioner of the CMP’s counter-terrorism unit, said police seized their computers and laptops used to create fake birth certificates.

In preliminary interrogation, those arrested said that they and several other groups have been forging certificates across the country for a long time.

“The group has so far made and distributed around 5,000 fake birth certificates, charging Tk 500-2,000 for each certificate,” Liaquat said.

Police believe the group has around 100 members, but only a few registered themselves, while others sold their services to interested people with fake certificates.

He said the group is connected across the country through a WhatsApp group. They operated their illegal ventures in Dhaka Municipal Corporation, Kumilla, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Bagerhat and many other areas.

The group used the seal and signature of the corporators of the areas seeking fake certificates after entering the final information to create the certificates.
