Shenzhou-16 crewed flight mission: successful return to Earth after 5 months in orbit

Jing, Zhu and Gui traveled to China’s Tiangong space station in late May and remained in orbit for 154 days.

He spent time conducting scientific experiments and conducted about eight hours of spacewalk.

A new crew replaced them after the Shenzhou-17 mission lifted off from the Jiuquan launch site in the country’s northwest last week.

According to the country’s manned space agency, Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengji and Jiang Xinlin will conduct “space science and application payload testing.”

They will also perform maintenance work to repair minor damage caused to the station by space debris.

Since President Xi Jinping took power a decade ago, Beijing has accelerated plans to become a major space power.

The world’s second-largest economy has invested billions of dollars in its military-run space program to catch up with the United States and Russia.

China also aims to send a crewed mission to the Moon by 2030 and eventually build a base on the lunar surface.
