The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a consensus resolution urging the International Court of Justice to provide an advisory opinion on the obligations of states with respect to climate change, BSS reports.

The resolution, introduced on March 29 by a core group of countries including Bangladesh, is a historic achievement for countries advocating for climate justice and equity, a release from the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN said on Thursday.

Introduced by the Prime Minister of Vanuatu, the resolution requested the ICJ to provide its opinion based on existing international law, including international human rights law and recognized principles, on the legal obligations and rights of states to ensure the protection of the climate system. It states that present and future generations should be saved from the effects of climate change.
