President Salome Zurabishvili vetoed the law on Saturday, but lawmakers have the votes to override her decision.
Blinken clarified that “anyone who undermines democratic processes or institutions in Georgia – including before, during, and after Georgia’s October 2024 elections – may be found ineligible for a U.S. visa” and could be denied travel to the U.S., including their immediate family members.
Critics say Georgia's move is similar to a Russian law used to suppress dissent, while Brussels has warned it is “incompatible” with Tbilisi's long-standing bid for EU membership.
Blinken said the US hopes “Georgia's leaders will reconsider the draft law and take steps to move forward with their country's democratic and Euro-Atlantic aspirations.”
