He will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Wednesday.

The delegation includes Clinton White, Counsel to the Administrator at USAID, Elizabeth Horst, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, US State Department, and Beth Van Schaak, Ambassador for Global Criminal Justice.

Bangladesh will continue to press for the lifting of US sanctions against the Rapid Action Battalion, a specialized anti-crime and counter-terrorist force, and its former and current officers during the discussions.

Cholet is coming specifically to discuss the Rohingya issue and look at the crisis at the site, Bangladesh’s position in dealing with them and the humanitarian assistance provided by the country, foreign ministry spokeswoman Saheli Sabreen said last week.

Bangladesh is currently sheltering more than 1.1 million Rohingya with the camp at Kutupalong in Cox’s Bazar, the world’s largest refugee settlement.

“We are very concerned about the situation in Myanmar, which is getting worse,” Cholet said in a TV interview ahead of his visit.

“And we, the United States, are doing what we do in cooperation with Bangladesh to try to ease the pressure on Bangladesh from this refugee crisis, by providing significant assistance to Bangladesh to assist with its humanitarian needs, but still Some of these refugees are back here in the United States with efforts to try to bring them.

Cholet’s visit to Bangladesh follows a series of recent visits by several high-level US officials.
