(History in brief)

Dhaka city has a long history, it is has a history of more than 400 years. Once Dhaka was one of the richest cities of the world. Peoples from around the world came to Dhaka to change their fate, as people now go to London or New York. But in the colonial period Dhaka lost its importance. East India Company thought it’s better to use Calcutta as capital. Calcutta remained capital of Bengal till the separation of India in 1947. The elites lived in Calcutta.

But at the beginning on 20th century the British government divided Bengal and Dhaka became capital again. Many residents of Dhaka hoped that the city will get back its glory. Many structures were built at that time.

Many prominent Calcutta based intellectuals including Rabindranath opposed this separation which made Dhaka capital. That separation didn’t last.

Finally Dhaka became provincial capital in 1947. After the liberation in 1971 Dhaka became full capital. This new status started changing this city.
