Hidden lives of BNP leaders and workers: Avoiding arrest and living in fear

Like these leaders and workers of Sonargaon upazila, many BNP leaders and workers of the district are fugitives. One of them is former district student group president Shafikul. With some followers he moved out of the district on 22 October, returning to the area on 3 November. After this, 30 people under the leadership of Farooq Hussain, General Secretary of Bhulta Ward No. 4 Jubo Dal, started spending the night in the graveyard of the locality. A group of people belonging to the ruling party attacked with local weapons and set fire to their makeshift house and belongings.

Speaking over phone on Wednesday, Shafiqul Islam said he was hiding at a place in Dhaka along with 10 others. Due to being a fugitive for a long time, his source of earning has stopped. Now the family members are going through poverty. Shafikul claimed that around 200 leaders of Jubo Dal and workers of Bhulta Union have fled their homes.

There are allegations that houses of BNP leaders and workers were attacked and looted.

According to BNP leaders and workers, the houses of 63 BNP leaders and workers were attacked and looted in the last four weeks. In some cases, women members have been beaten.

BNP alleged that local leaders and workers of Awami League and leading organizations carried out these attacks.

According to the absconding BNP leaders and workers, BNP will form the government through the movement. Then they will not need to run away. They will get relief from politically motivated cases.
