1,250 tonnes of sugar stuck at Benapole port due to price complications

The authorities increased the duty to $140 per tonne after the Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association complained to the customs officials about the previous rate for imports.

Latif said the importer then decided not to release the consignment as it would suffer losses at the new duty rate.

According to Mohammad Shafayet Hussain, Joint Commissioner, Benapole Customs House, the higher authorities will take a decision regarding the matter.

Indian truck driver Ashish Sarkar, stuck there with a truck for a month, was fuming.

“I don’t know when the Chinese will be released. I am forced to spend cold nights in the truck, and am facing a lot of trouble in bathing and eating.”
