Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) had a reputation that it’s not politicized like other public universities of Bangladesh. Cream students of the country get the opportunity to study here. Some foreign students also studies here.
Now situation is different, teachers association of the university is demanding the withdrawal of the vice chancellor. There are sixteen point allegations including nepotism and irregularities against the vice chancellor. But he is refusing to step down. He is saying that he will resign only if the government asks him to resign. Apparently he has the backing of the student wing of the ruling party.
Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party has termed this movement as a movement of the fundamentalist party Jamaat-e-Islami.
The teachers of the university abstained from their duty from 7th April to 5th May. They withdrew their strike receiving assurance from prime minister. Now they feel that their demands are not met.
They threatened to start strike for indefinite period from 14th July. But the authority declared vacation of 44 days for summer, Ramadan, Puja and Eid. The vacation was due to start form the 11th of August.
After then a dramatic move from teachers came. 25 teachers resigned from their positions of deans, departmental heads and institute directors expressing their no confidence on the vice chancellor. They are also demanding the withdrawal of the pro vice chancellor.
