The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has identified the negligence and carelessness of 12 top officials, including the then Governor, in the Bangladesh Bank reserve robbery case.

The investigation into the case registered regarding the incident has not been completed yet. However, the CID said that the investigation is in the final stages.

Hackers stole $81 million from the Bangladesh Bank Reserve eight years ago.

Investigation sources said the hackers were successful in stealing money from the reserves due to negligence and carelessness in ensuring the security of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) system.

The officers who are responsible for the heist include an executive director (currently retired), a general manager (currently deputy governor), four joint directors (two of them are currently deputy general managers, one a joint director and another on retirement), Three are included. Deputy General Managers (two of them are now General Managers) and two Deputy Directors.

At that time, except the Governor and the Executive Director, the remaining officials were in the Foreign Exchange Reserve and Treasury Management Department, Accounting and Budgeting, IT Operations and Communications Department, Payment Systems Department and the Back Office of the Dealing Room. They provided an opportunity to hackers by leaving the server room open with no internet connection and being absent.
