UN agencies and humanitarian aid groups have warned that many of Gaza's 2.4 million people are on the brink of famine, and donor countries have sporadically delivered food by trucks and by plane.

A second ship carrying relief supplies via the Mediterranean Sea was off the coast of Gaza on Monday, days after leaving Cyprus, according to the website Vesselfinder.com.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – whose office said on Sunday he had a “successful” hernia operation – has vowed to destroy Hamas, including Gaza's far southern city of Rafah.

The prime minister “is in good condition and is beginning to recover”, his office said in a statement.

Netanyahu is under increasing pressure from the hostages' families and supporters, as well as anti-government protesters, whose nightly street rallies have gained momentum and brought thousands into the streets.

The right-wing prime minister has also been at odds with Israel's top ally the United States, which has objected to his plan to invade Rafah as the city of about 1.5 million people is crowded.

An Israeli source told AFP that a meeting has been scheduled for Monday via video conference, after Netanyahu earlier canceled a visit by an Israeli government delegation to Washington to discuss the Rafah operation.
