Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say Israeli strike kills senior Syrian general

An Israeli strike in Syria has killed a senior general in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, the military force said, as Tehran vowed retaliation.

The incident has further escalated tensions in the Middle East, where Iran-aligned groups have stepped up attacks since Iran-backed Hamas militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, triggering a war with Israel.

Iranian state media also reported Razi Mousavi’s death, describing him as “one of the most experienced advisers” of the Quds Force, the foreign branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

There was no immediate comment from Israel, which has stepped up attacks in Syria, especially against Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement, since the Israel-Hamas war began.

After General Qassem Soleimani, Mousavi is the most senior Quds Force commander to be killed outside Iran. Almost four years ago, on January 3, 2020, Quds Force leader Suleimani was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad.
