Japan will tighten its COVID-19 border control measures for travelers from China from Sunday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said, in response to a surge in infections among such visitors.
Kishida said on Wednesday that additional measures, carrying forward measures adopted on December 30, would require passengers to have a negative coronavirus test before boarding a direct flight from China.
Japan will keep asking airlines to limit additional flights from China, he said at a nationally televised New Year’s news conference.
“Necessary restrictions are still in place as we are taking all possible measures to prevent infection,” Kishida said.
