Gold smuggling seems unstoppable. Some consignments have been blocked in recent months. Gold was found in aircraft cargo wall, in pants of passenger. There is allegation that local jewelers don’t import gold because they rely on smuggling.
In a latest incident gold was found in shoe of a cabin crew named Kamal Hossain. He came to Dhaka from Dubai by BG-022 flight today. Gold was found after searching him, when he was crossing green channel of Dhaka Shahjalal International Airport. Customs officials say, price of the gold would be about ten lakh taka. Departmental enquiry will be conducted against him.
In another incident about eight hundred and fifty grams of gold was found in possession of a traveler reached Dhaka by a Thai Airways flight. Price of gold will be nearing thirty lakh taka.
Not only at Dhaka airport, gold is seized at Chittagong and Sylhet international airport in recent months. Analysts say, smugglers are using Bangladesh as part of route.
