In 2022, the five northern districts are expected to produce 17.759m kg of processed tea against the total national production of 93.83m kg, accounting for 18.92 per cent.
“As per the guidance of Major General Mohammad Ashraful Islam, chairman of BTB, we are providing latest technology and training to the farmers for further development of tea industry on the plain lands in the north,” Hussain said.
Shahinur Rahman, a tea grower from Buraburi village in Tentulia upazila of Panchgarh, said he started ‘small-scale horticulture-based’ tea cultivation on his land seven years ago.
“I am now cultivating tea on 6.50 acres of land and selling green tea-leaves to tea processing companies to earn handsome profits,” said Rahman.
Farmers Ali Ahsan Prodhan of Sadar Upazila and Matiar Rahman of Atwari Upazila in Panchgarh said that tea cultivation on ‘small scale horticulture basis’ is increasing in the plains every year, benefiting the farmers.
“After getting repeated bumper yields every year with good prices, I am now cultivating tea on about 60 acres,” said Rahman.
