UNHCR ‘not involved’ in discussions on Bangladesh-Myanmar pilot project on Rohingya repatriation

“This is particularly important as many refugees have reiterated that they hope to return to Myanmar as soon as conditions permit,” the UNHCR said.

Following the events of August 2017, the UNHCR has consistently encouraged Myanmar to rapidly verify the previous residence of refugees in Bangladesh, in order to remove any administrative barriers to return when the refugees decide to do so. Under the efforts of

“UNHCR therefore supports efforts that can lead to verification of all refugees and eventually pave the way for return. This recently included providing logistical support to members of the Myanmar delegation to cross into Bangladesh for the technical verification process,” the UN agency said.

UNHCR said it would continue to work with Bangladesh and Myanmar to ensure that Rohingya refugees retain their right to return based on a fully informed and voluntary decision.
