According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) Bangladesh Sample Vital Statistics Report 2022, about 41 percent of youth in Bangladesh are inactive. This means that they are neither in education, employed nor receiving any on-the-job training.

Notably, the rate of inactivity among girls is quite high, at 61.71 percent, while among boys it is as low as 18.59 percent. The number of such inactive youth is increasing.

BBS has defined the age range of 15 to 24 years to determine the rate of inactive youth. Based on this criteria, the report suggests that the number of inactive youth in Bangladesh is approximately 12.9 million.

Economists and labor market experts attribute the high rates of inactive youth to various factors, including early marriage of girls, lack of necessary job skills, inadequate education, insufficient employment opportunities, and poor social conditions.
