highcourtThe High Court has declared contempt of court law 2013 illegal and unconstitutional today. This verdict came from a high court bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain.

The government enacted the law this year to replace Contempt of Court Law 1926. But a writ petition was filed challenging section 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 13(2) of the law. The court said these eight sections violate the constitution as these give special protection to some quarters of the society, it is discriminatory and article 108 of the constitution clearly states the power of the higher court.

The court emphasized that they are not against the media; sometimes they also take help from newsmen. But everything must be within constitutional limit.

Experts are saying, from now on there is no effect of the newly enacted law and Contempt of Court Law 1926 has taken its effect.
