Cyprus police on Monday rescued 18 Syrian migrants after their boat capsized about 3.5 miles off the southeast coast of the Mediterranean island nation.

Police said 11 men, three unidentified minors, a woman and her three children had sailed from Tartus, Syria, and were brought ashore on a police patrol ship.

The official Cyprus News Agency reported that the woman and her children were taken to hospital after one of the children fainted. The migrants’ boat reportedly sank.

The remaining 14 migrants were taken to a reception center on the western edge of the capital, Nicosia. Police said a 23-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of promoting illegal entry.
