The energy pipeline between India and Bangladesh was built at an estimated cost of INR 3.77 billion.

The Bangladeshi portion of the pipeline, built at a cost of 2.85 billion (approx.), is financed by the Government of India under its grant assistance.

The pipeline has the capacity to transport 1 million tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of high-speed diesel (HSD). It will initially supply high speed diesel to seven districts in northern Bangladesh.

According to official sources, a long-term agreement was signed in 2017 to import diesel from India to Bangladesh through the pipeline, which stretches from Siliguri in West Bengal to Meghna Petroleum Depot at Parbatipur in Dinajpur.

The operationalization of the “India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline” will establish HSD in a sustainable, reliable, cost-effective and environment-friendly mode of transportation from India to Bangladesh.

This will further enhance cooperation in energy security between the two friendly neighbours.
