High salinity concentration in underground water of northern districts: Study reveals worrying findings

The Fisheries Department said this could have serious implications as fish farming is done across the country and 57 per cent of freshwater fish is farmed in 2,519,872 ponds.

Regarding using salt in ponds for fish farming, Alok Kumar Saha, Deputy Director, Fisheries Department, said, “We recommend using salt in ponds during winter because a type of fungus affects the fishes during that season. Attacks.”

However, he questioned the data on increasing salinity concentrations in groundwater for the use of salt in fish farming. He said that the amount of salt used is not so much that it gets absorbed into the ground water. Alok stressed that a detailed study is needed in this regard.
