Iran-backed militants attack US-led coalition base in Iraq: Tension rises in Middle East

US Central Command said Saturday that Iran-backed militants fired ballistic missiles at a base hosting US forces in western Iraq, causing one Iraqi and possible American casualties.

“Multiple ballistic missiles and rockets were fired by Iranian-backed militants in western Iraq targeting al-Assad airbase,” CENTCOM said in a social media post. ,

The statement said most of the projectiles were intercepted by the base’s air defense systems, but “others impacted the base”.

“Multiple US personnel are being evaluated for traumatic brain injuries. “At least one Iraqi service member was injured.”

There have been dozens of attacks on US and coalition forces deployed to fight Islamic State group jihadists in Iraq and Syria since mid-October.
