Buses plying from the Syedabad bus terminal to southern districts are reportedly charging extra fare from those heading home for Eid.
Moreover, due to traffic congestion in the Sayedabad Bus Terminal area, buses have to wait for hours to leave the bus terminal.
This picture came to light when Syedabad bus terminal was visited on Saturday afternoon.
Passengers allege that they are being forced to pay extra fare to go home because they have no other option. On the other hand, transport workers argue that they are charging extra fare because they will have to return to Dhaka with empty seats.
The ticket crisis was mainly in buses in the southern districts, while tickets were available in the eastern districts.
The fare for a Dhaka-Barishal ticket in non-AC buses is 500 taka during normal times, but at 1:30 pm a ticket was being sold at the counter for 800 taka. A man named Mohammad Khairul Bashar bought two tickets for 1600 taka.
“I looked for the ticket at different places but to no avail. Finally, I got the ticket here. Although they are charging extra fare, I have no other option. So I bought the ticket for 800 taka. This ticket is usually sold for 500 taka,” said Khairul, who works in a government organisation.
