Bangladesh is the fourth most lead pollution affected country in the world. About 36 million children in Bangladesh, or 60 percent, are victims of lead poisoning, with an average blood lead level of 6.8 μg/dL.
A recent World Bank study shows that children in Bangladesh have lost 20 million intelligence quotient (IQ) points, leading to a high economic cost of US$10,897 million, equivalent to 3.6 percent of the country’s GDP.
In Bangladesh, major sources of lead exposure include lead acid battery recycling, lead paint, aluminum cookware, ceramic food utensils, spices, toys, cosmetics, food, electronic waste, fertilizers, and cultured fish feed used in informal settings.
