Since the issue of denial of fair wages and benefits to readymade garment workers of Bangladesh is widely discussed at the international level, it is extremely important to look into the matter as to why workers are not paid as per the new pay scale and make adjustments. But why are they dissatisfied? Of grade.

The new pay scale for RMG employees is expected to come into effect from December 1, 2023. Although the new pay scale has been implemented in most of the garment factories, the owners of some factories are delaying it. As a result, dissatisfaction has erupted among RMG employees.

According to Prothom Alo report, in the last one week, workers of at least 10 factories in Ghazipur demonstrated demanding adjustment of wages and grades as per the new pay scale. On Monday, a factory was closed indefinitely. Besides this, a unit of a factory in Savar is closed. Following the workers’ demonstration, five factories in the Savar EPZ area were closed. Later four factories were opened. Meanwhile, another factory has been closed indefinitely, in a follow-up to labor unrest, according to media reports.
