“We are expecting natural gas reserves in four areas of the well. We are assuming that we will be able to extract 10 million cubic feet of natural gas from each of these fields which will be added to the national grid.

BAPEX officials say the country needs additional gas to further fuel its economy and industrialization. To meet this demand, the government is giving utmost importance to domestic energy exploration and production. The government aims to identify, develop and drill 46 new gas fields by 2025.

The first drilling was done in Noakhali in 1976 as part of the gas exploration program in Begumganj Upazila. Later, in 1978, another well was drilled. However, gas was not found in the desired quantity in any of the wells.

Nearly 35 years later, in 2013, another well was drilled and this time, officials identified the desired gas. Withdrawal from that well started later. That well is providing 8 million cubic feet of gas to the national grid.
