Benjamin Brière, a fellow French national who was sentenced to eight years in prison for espionage last year, is being held in the same prison.
“Bernard Phelan is in contact twice a day with the crisis unit of the French foreign ministry, which forwards messages to his family,” the source said.
But requests for direct communication with the family have been turned down by Iranian officials.
Diplomatic sources said that after repeated requests, Phelan got his first French consular visit on 9 January.
