Seventy eight years old Indian novelist Sunil Gangopadhyay died of heart attack at his residence today at around 2 am. He was one of the most popular Bengali writers in India. He also gained huge popularity in Bangladesh. He was born in 1934 in Faridpur of present Bangladesh. His first poem was published on ‘Desh’ when he was only fifteen years old. He preferred writing poem, but he explored almost all genres of literature including novels, plays, short stories, newspaper columns and children’s literature. He always considered himself as a secular citizen.

He wrote more than two hundred books and received many prestigious awards including Sahitya Academy Award, Bankim Puraskar and Ananda Puraskar. He had an extraordinary ability to write on common people’s day to day life.

“Keu Kotha Rakheni” was one of the most popular poems among the youths of 70s and 80s. Satyajit Ray made a film “Aranyer Din Raatri” on story of his book. Cremation of Sunil Gangopadhyay will be held after the arrival of his son from the USA
